Daniel Pinkwater was born on a mountain top in
Tennessee. Sadly his family moved with him to
Chicago before he turned three, so someone else
became king of the wild frontier. Daniel was
contemplating becoming king of the rackets, when
his family suddenly left Chicago for Los Angeles.
Living in Los Angeles he met the offspring of
many famous people, and they met him.
When he was a young teen his family moved back
to Chicago. In Chicago Daniel ate a great many
hot dogs, saw a great many movies, and learned
that he did not have the right disposition to
be king of the rackets.
Daniel attended Bard College where he majored
in Art. After graduation he moved to Hoboken
New Jersey where he painted his apartment, and
some other things. Daniel has held a number of
jobs including art teacher, dog trainer, radio
commentator, and children's author.
Daniel now lives in New York's Hudson River
Valley with his wife, illustrator Jill
Pinkwater. Jill has been Daniel's wife longer
than she has been his illustrator. She is also
an author. Together they have two dogs (Maxine
and Lulu), and a lot of cats. Daniel has
written more than seventy books for children
and some for adults, he is a commentator for
NPR's All Things Considered, the children's
literature expert for NPR's Weekend Edition
Saturday with Scott Simon, and the co-host, and
literary guru, of the now-extinct Chinwag
Theater.
